Local Hurt In Canoe Accident

A celebratory event almost turned tragic for a Crossroads area native.
While on a camping trip last weekend, Alison Parson and four friends were canoeing on the Duck River when a storm blew up.

“They went up into a slough to see if they could find shelter,” Parson’s mother, Martha, relayed during a phone interview Wednesday afternoon.

Finding an area where a man’s cows came down to the river to drink, a male friend in the canoe with Parson and another girl pulled the boat up to the muddy shore and got out to pull it up further for the two women to disembark.

Limbs were falling around them and the man began teasing them about being hit by one. Suddenly, the friend told Parson’s mother later, he heard a loud pop and saw the top of a tree plummeting down the 30 to 40 foot cliff above them.

As her friend yelled out a warning, Parson looked up, saw the tree falling toward her and bent her head down as a protective instinct.

Parson’s mother said the tree hit her with a glancing blow and knocked her down into the bottom of the canoe. The tree then hit the metal canoe and bent it in a V shape.

The force of the tree hitting the canoe threw Parson out into the water and the tree ended up on top of her, pinning her lower body into the water.

The male friend jumped into the water to make sure Parson’s head remained above the surface and a woman in the second canoe, who happened to be a nurse, made her way through the thick mud to check on the extent of Parson’s injuries.
